His research interests include ecodesign of products in developing countries in particular small island developing states (SIDS), life cycle engineering, advanced aerospace composites and structures, and finite element method and analysis.
He has a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering (Hons, 2001) and a PhD in aerospace structures (2005) from the University of Sydney, Australia. In 2006 he returned to his home country of Fiji where he now concentrates on environmental design and issues relating to waste prevention in SIDS.

rencontre barthelasse - The Design for Sustainability in South Pacific Small Island Developing States project is a cooperation between the University of the South Pacific (Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment) and the University of Grenoble (G-SCOP laboratory). This cooperation was initiated in 2003 in the field of integrated solid waste management and has adopted since then a more pollution prevention approach, through clean production and ecodesign / Design for Sustainability. A UNEP method called Design for Sustainability has been adapted to the South Pacific context and tested with companies in the region. In particular, a textile product (a backpack) has been redesigned and launched on the market.
The project has been so far funded by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), the French Fonds Pacifique and the French Embassy in Suva (Fiji Islands), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
